Sustainability Is Becoming the New Standard in Hair

For a long time, the beauty industry was all about the end result: the perfect blonde, the richest brunette, the glossiest finish. And while we’re obviously still obsessed with creating really freaking good hair, there’s another conversation becoming increasingly important behind the chair:

How are the products we use actually being made?

Sustainability is becoming a bigger part of the professional hair world, and we think that’s a really exciting shift.

Good Hair + Better Choices

As hairstylists, we work with A LOT of product. Color, developers, lighteners, treatments, shampoos, conditioners, foils, gloves - the list goes on.

So when brands begin thinking differently about ingredients, manufacturing, packaging, waste and the overall environmental impact of professional beauty, those choices can add up.

We’re beginning to see more professional brands put real thought into exactly that.

Recently, Elyce & Amanda attended an education class with Oligo Professionnel, where they had the opportunity to learn more about not only their color, but the thought and education that goes into developing it.

They

left completely inspired.

It was a reminder that innovation in hair color isn't only about creating a prettier shade. It's about asking how we can create incredible results while being more intentional about the products and processes behind them.

Sustainability Doesn't Mean Sacrificing the Result

This might be our favorite part.

Choosing products with sustainability in mind doesn't mean lowering our expectations for performance. If anything, the professional beauty industry is showing us that the two can exist together.

We can care about thoughtful product development and demand beautiful, dimensional, shiny, healthy-looking hair.

After our Oligo education, we couldn't wait to start playing with their color behind the chair. One of our first creations was a warm, dimensional brunette toned with Calura Gloss 7.4 + 8.34 — and the result immediately landed on our fall hair inspiration board.

What We Think the Future of Luxury Hair Looks Like

We think clients are going to continue caring more about what's behind the products they use — not just how those products make their hair look.

Where was it made? What ingredients are being used? How is the company thinking about waste? What values are behind the brand?

And as professionals, it's our responsibility to keep learning too.

For us, luxury isn't simply using the most expensive product on the shelf. It's being educated enough to make thoughtful choices about what we're using, why we're using it and how it benefits the person sitting in our chair.

Great hair will always matter. But we think the future of great hair is going to be a whole lot more intentional.
