If you've noticed a few stray hairs coming out of your extensions and wondered, “Is this supposed to happen?” — you're not alone. Shedding is one of the most common concerns for anyone new to hair extensions, and we’re here to set the record straight.
At Haute Hair Studio, we believe in transparency, education, and keeping your hair (and peace of mind) intact. Let’s talk about what’s totally normal — and when it’s time to flag your stylist.
💡 First, Let’s Talk About Natural Shedding
Your natural hair sheds about 50–100 strands a day — and that’s without extensions. When you wear extensions, some of that shedding gets trapped in the row (because it’s no longer free to fall to the floor or your brush). So when we remove and reinstall your extensions, we’ll see some of that natural buildup. That’s expected!

✅ What’s Considered Normal Shedding?
A few individual hairs falling from the wefts over time
Shedding from your own scalp that’s collected in the row
Minor shedding after brushing, especially with hand-tied wefts
Shedding when you wash — especially right after install
In short: some shedding is inevitable and totally okay.
🚩 What’s Not Normal?
Excessive shedding from the wefts themselves(like chunks of hair detaching from the weft thread — that’s a red flag)
Beads slipping out frequently or easilyThis could mean incorrect tension or application issues.
Unusual hair loss from your own scalpIf you’re noticing bald spots, irritation, or hair loss beyond the row, something’s off — and we want to catch it early.
